Welcome to Koloa

Also known as “Old Koloa Town”, this quaint 1800s-style plantation town is a collection of old plantation and false fronted buildings which now serve as a series of specialty shops and restaurants. The “downtown area” is centered around a huge banyan tree. Dining and shopping can be enjoyed in the authentically restored buildings, many of which feature historical information on each building. Koloa is the site of the oldest sugar plantation in Hawaii located just south of the famous Tunnel Of Trees.

The Koloa History Center is a small museum offering a brief introduction to the history of the area in the form of artifacts from the old plantation days and incorporating an early Hawaiian bath house. Old Koloa Town Mall is a collection of specialty shops, and restaurants. South of town, the Koloa Landing was once the main port of entry to the island and was a favorite of the Yankee Pacific whaling fleet. Some sugar cane fields around Koloa town are still in production. King Kamehameha III leased the land to Duncan McBryde in 1835. The remains of the sugar mill along with a plaque to the workers is located across the street from the shops in town.

Today the little town boasts over 100 businesses, most within a 10 minute walk of each other. Koloa has specialty shops, restaurants, and a historical center.
each summer, a huge celebration is held to commemorate its heritage.

Every summer, a huge celebration called “Koloa Plantation Days” is held to commemorate its heritage, featuring a parade, fair, music, games, and storytelling. The town got a face-lift in the 1980’s with new paint and some restoration, but it still has some of the oldest buildings in Hawaii.

The Waikomo Road neighborhood, has been slated for redevelopment.
